Recycled Spooky Spider
Before you throw out those big empty plastic bottles, take the opportunity to show the kids how to recycle it into a Spooky Spider for Halloween decorations.
Supplies
1 water bottle or similar containerTape (regular masking tape)
8 bendy straws
Permanent markers (to color your spider)
Instructions
Bend your straws!
I began by taking all 8 bendable straws and bending them to about the same shape. I then wrapped tape around each bend to keep it permanently bent. Do this to all 8 straws... try to keep them all bent about the same angle.
Cover with tape!
Next, I completely covered up my bottle and legs with regular masking tape. After everything was covered with a base layer of tape I covered my entire spider again with a billion pieces of masking tape that I carefully ripped by hand into small scales, overlaying each one on top off the previous one. This created a incredible scaly bug look, but be forewarned...it took forever!
Make your eyebrows!
To make the eyebrow/head part of my spider I simply wadded up some tape and molded it to make the shape I liked. This is one of my most closely guarded secrets! When you wad up masking tape, you can shape it like clay.
Finish your eyebrows!
Then I simply covered my eyebrow/head with a finished layer of tape and taped it onto the front of my spider... or should I say to the bottom of my bottle?
Make your fangs!
I ended up making my spider fangs by twisting and wrapping a bunch of tape. You could make yours by twisting some paper into a point and covering it up with tape.
Attach your fangs!
After I attached my legs and fangs to the main body I spent quite a bit of time coloring my spider with some permanent markers. This is where you could get really creative. Maybe you could paint it all black? After seeing my son's soap box spider, I made eight eyes and attached them, making them look like they are looking in all different directions. VOILA! A spooky water bottle spider just in time for halloween.
