TP Flyer
August 19th is National Aviation Day and a great day to create your own airplane from cardboard tubes. The Professors says “Always use your imagination and be creative when building these kids crafts or any others. It’s your creation, so be inventive when looking for building supplies — you just may be surprised! When building your project, experiment with new and different ways of putting it together. The most important thing is to have fun!”
Supplies
Toilet paper tube
Regular Masking tape
Blue Masking Tape ( Optional For Customizing)
Cereal box or some Cardboard
Clear plastic container
2 Paper clips
2 Pen caps
Straw or an old pen/pencil
Editor's Note: If you are concerned about germs on the toilet paper tube, pop it in the microwave for a couple of seconds before using.
Instructions
Start out by cutting your toilet paper tube at an angle. This is where the windshield will go. If you want you could leave it just the way it is and have a snub-nosed jet.
I made my windshield from a clear plastic container. Find a part of the clear plastic that has a nice shape which you think might make a good canopy. Hold the angled side of your toilet paper tube down onto the plastic and trace around the opening. Then carefully cut out your windshield.
This took me a couple of tries to get right. I ended up tracing it a little bigger than the end of my angled tube, and then trimmed a little off until it fit perfectly.
Next, tape on your Flyer's tail. I used a piece of straw about four inches long. You could try using something else like a old pen or even a stick. I taped my tail onto the inside back end, but you could attach yours on the top. Remember to always be creative and try different ways of putting your project together.
Making the landing gear is as simple as bending some paper clips into the shape you like and taping them onto the bottom of your Flyer's body.
You can use all sorts of supplies to make the wing and tail pieces. I like to use old cereal boxes. Cut out one side of the box and lay it printed side down. Next draw and cut out your wing and tail section. Try making a few different designs. Then loosely attach them and decide which ones you like the best. Remember, it's your project and anything goes!
I like to dry-fit everything before I put together my project. This is a good time to make any changes or alterations to your design. Anything goes! When you are happy with your plane it's time for the final step...decorating!
If you want to spend a little more time, you can really make your TP. Flyer look nice. This is my favorite part of any project — covering it with tape and dressing it up! I like to use different colored tape to make the project look really cool. I made a design on the wings with my blue tape, and carefully outlined the plastic canopy as well. If you prefer, you could use some colored markers or crayons, even some stickers! As always, try different things and have fun.
OK — now it's time to put it all together. For my TP Flyer I used small strips of tape to attach the wing and tail sections together. Then I found two old pen caps to use as my jet engines and attached them under the wing with tape. I also played around with the windshield design.
And there you have it...a cool T.P. Flyer, made from nothing but trash and tape!
