No Sew Heart Shaped Jewelry Holder
This craft is perfect for teens. You can easily change the look by your choice of fabric – here, they used a patchwork cotton print, but solid print fabric in velvet or satin with matching or contrasting ribbon would have a different kind of charm.
Supplies
Paper to make a heart patternThin plywood to cut a heart shape, or purchased wooden heart-shaped plaque
Fabric to fit the heart shape
Scroll saw or coping saw
Glue gun and glue sticks, or strong tacky glue
Batting to fit the heart shape
Thin ribbon
Brass hooks
Lace yardage to fit around the heart
Felt to cover the back

Instructions
If you are making your own heart shape, cut out a rectangle of newspaper that is roughly the size that you want the finished jewelry holder to be. Fold the newspaper in half, lengthwise, and place the fold on the left.
Now draw half a heart shape on this folded paper. Begin drawing the heart at the top, as if you were drawing the upper part of a large question mark.
The arch should go from the left fold to the right side. Once the arch is formed, draw a straight line down to the bottom of the left hand fold. Cut out your paper pattern and unfold.
Use the paper pattern to trace a heart shape on thin plywood. Cut out the heart with a scroll saw or coping saw and sand the edges smooth if necessary.
If you are using a purchased wooden heart plaque, draw around the plaque on newspaper and cut out this paper pattern.
Use the paper pattern to cut a heart shape from batting, then glue the batting to your cardboard or plywood heart.
Again, use the paper pattern to trace a heart shape on the back of the fabric. Around this shape, draw another heart, about 1 to 1-1/2 inches larger, {depending on the thickness of your wood and batting) so that the fabric will fit easily over the batting and overhang the back.
Draw a line from the center top point of the outside heart to 1/8" away from the center top point of the inner heart, then cut carefully along this line.
Position the fabric over the batting. Fold the overhanging fabric to the back of the heart and glue in place, working with one section of the heart at a time.
Begin gluing at the center top point, gluing the fabric around first one arch, then the other, smoothing the fabric and keeping it taut at the front as you work.
Once the fabric is in place at the top, turn the heart to the front, smooth the fabric down the sides with your fingers, and begin gluing down the overhang at the bottom point of the heart.
Finish by gluing down both of the sides, smoothing out the fabric as you go.
You now have the basic padded heart. Using the photo as a guide, measure and cut lengths of thin ribbon to fit diagonally across your heart, with a little extra to fold over and glue to the back.
Glue all four ribbons in place.
Glue the lace trim in place, beginning and ending at the top center back, with the right side of the lace facing the front of the heart.
Screw in the brass hooks, beginning with one hook at the jewelry holder center and one at each intersection of the ribbons.
Look at the photo for placement of the hooks in each of the fabric sections. Make sure that any hook is not placed in a direct line with any hook above or below it; you want to provide space between hanging necklaces or jewelry.
Use your paper pattern to cut out a felt back; glue this in place all along the edges, covering the raw edges of the lace and fabric.
Attach a tooth-edge picture hanger at the center back of the jewelry holder. Present the heart-shaped jewelry holder to your gift recipient and help them to hang it on the wall!
