Supplies

  • A4 or letter size printable cardstock
  • Crayons or water-based paint such as poster paint, tempera, or acrylic paint
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Gold glitter glue or puffy paint (optional)
  • Plastic gems, sequins, or gem stickers (optional)
  • Stapler (optional)

Instructions

Choose one of the Roman Imperial Helmet templates. You can use the plain template and decorate it yourself, print the ready-to-color version, or use the full-color helmet template for a quicker project.

Print the template pages on cardstock. The first page includes the main helmet piece and two long straight bands. Color or paint these pieces in metallic shades such as gold or silver.

The second page includes the visor, two cheek guards, and the crest. Color or paint these pieces as well. The fan-shaped top of the crest looks especially nice in red. Leave the tabs marked “Glue here” unpainted so the glue sticks well.

Let all of the pieces dry completely if you used paint. Cut out all of the template pieces carefully.

Take the crest and cut along the inside lines to create the fringed top.

Apply glue to the crest tab and attach it behind the top center of the main helmet piece.

Glue the cheek guards behind the lower corners of the helmet.

Attach one straight band behind the lower left side of the helmet and the second straight band behind the lower right side.

Glue the visor in place near the front where the bands meet the helmet. This gives the visor a slight curve and helps the helmet look more three-dimensional.

At this point, you have a basic Roman helmet ready to wear. Wrap the bands around the child’s head and glue or staple the ends together for a comfortable fit.

To decorate the helmet, add glitter glue, puffy paint, or colored glue in swirls, leaves, dots, or other fancy patterns. Roman helmets often featured decorative embossed details.

You can also add plastic gems, sequins, buttons, or paper circles to make rivets and other decorative accents.
