Supplies

  • 3 pieces of copy paper
  • 1 piece of card stock
  • Glue and/or stapler
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Old toothbrush
  • Photo
  • Cup and/or large lid to trace around
  • Pencil

Instructions

  1. Fold one piece of copy paper back and forth like a fan. Fold the fan in half and crease it well. Trim the open end into a rounded petal shape. Staple the long inside edge where the two sides meet. Repeat this process with the other two sheets of copy paper to make three folded petal sections.
  2. Place the three folded sections side by side and staple the long edges together to form one large flower.
  3. Trace around a cup or large lid onto the photo to make a round flower center. Carefully cut out the photo.
  4. Cut a piece of card stock to the size you want for the card base and fold it in half.
  5. Print or write a Mother’s Day message for the inside of the card. Glue the flower to the front of the card and attach the round photo to the center of the flower.
  6. To add extra fun, dip an old toothbrush into paint and gently splatter paint onto the card for a colorful background. Let it dry completely before giving it to Mom.

Tips

  • A light cardstock or sturdy copy paper works well for the flower petals.
  • If you do not want to use staples on the flower, you can glue the folded sections together instead, but let them dry fully before attaching the photo.
  • Kids can personalize the inside with a handwritten note, poem, or reasons why they love Mom.

Patterns, Templates and Printables

Use a round template, cup, or lid to trace the flower center on the photo. Add a printed or handwritten Mother’s Day message inside the card to make it extra special.

Teacher Friendly Educational Extension

This craft works well as a classroom Mother’s Day project because it combines art, fine motor practice, and personal writing. Students can practice folding, cutting, tracing circles, and assembling printable templates into a finished keepsake. For a writing extension, have students write a short message or list three things they love about their mom, grandma, or another special caregiver. This also makes a lovely bulletin board display before the cards are sent home.
