Fun Facts

International Day of Peace is observed every year on September 21. It was created by the United Nations as a day dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace around the world.

Pinwheels are often used as symbols of movement, hope, and change. When kids make their own Pinwheels for Peace, they are creating both a craft and a message.

Teacher Friendly Educational Extension

Use this Pinwheels for Peace craft as a classroom activity for International Day of Peace. Before making the craft, talk with students about what peace means at home, at school, and around the world.

Have each child write one peaceful word or short sentence on their pinwheel before decorating it. Ideas include “Be kind,” “Help others,” “Share,” “Listen,” or “Peace around the world.”

When the pinwheels are finished, create a classroom display, bulletin board, or outdoor peace garden. This activity works well with social studies lessons, character education, writing prompts, and classroom discussions about kindness and community.
