DIY felt pocket mirror craft

A pocket mirror is also a fun beginner project for kids because it uses basic supplies and simple steps. Children can personalize it with felt colors, flowers, buttons, gems, or other embellishments to make each one unique.

Fun Facts

Most mirrors are made by adding a thin layer of metal to the back of a smooth piece of glass. The glass helps create a clear reflection and protects the reflective coating from damage.

Supplies

  • 2 x 2 inch mirror
  • Cardboard cut to 2.5 x 5.25 inches
  • Felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Scissors
  • Velcro dot
  • Embellishments

Instructions

  1. Fold the cardboard in half and crease it firmly, then open it back up.
  2. Cover both sides of the cardboard with felt using fabric glue. Let it dry, then fold it closed again.
  3. Glue the mirror to the inside bottom half of the felt-covered cardboard.
  4. Cut a strip of felt to make a closure strap. Glue one end to the back of the mirror case.
  5. Attach one side of the Velcro dot to the loose end of the felt strap and the other side to the front of the case.
  6. Decorate the outside with embellishments such as flowers, buttons, felt shapes, or gems.
  7. Let everything dry completely before placing the mirror in a purse or pocket.

Patterns, Templates and Printables

This project does not require a printable template, but you can include a simple rectangular cutting guide for younger children if needed.

Teacher Friendly Educational Extension

This craft is a good activity for practicing measuring, folding, and following steps in order. Children can also design their own decorative patterns and talk about how handmade gifts can show kindness and appreciation. In a classroom, students could make these as Mother’s Day gifts or as part of a lesson on useful easy crafts for kids.
