Printable Beach Scavenger Hunt

A printable beach scavenger hunt is a fun way to help kids slow down, look closely, and notice all the little treasures around them at the shore. From shells and seaweed to birds, rocks, and footprints in the sand, this easy beach activity turns a simple walk into an adventure.

Beach scavenger hunt fun for kids

Print a copy for each child before your beach trip, tuck the pages into a beach bag, and bring along markers or crayons. For extra protection, place each printable in a plastic sleeve so kids can check off items without worrying about splashes or sandy fingers.

Supplies

  • White paper
  • Printer
  • Markers, crayons, or pencils
  • Plastic sleeves or laminating sheets, optional
  • Washable markers, optional if reusing laminated pages

Instructions

  1. Print one Printable Beach Scavenger Hunt page for each child. It is a good idea to print a few extras in case any pages get wet or sandy.
  2. For a reusable version, laminate the scavenger hunt page or place it inside a plastic sleeve. Kids can use washable markers to check off each item, then wipe the page clean and use it again.
  3. Bring the scavenger hunt along on your beach day. After the kids have had time to splash, dig, and play, hand out the pages and invite them to search for the items they can spot around them.
  4. Remind children to look carefully, but leave nature where it belongs. Shells, rocks, plants, and tiny beach creatures are part of the beach habitat.
  5. And of course, don’t forget sunscreen, water, and a little shade break.

Fun Facts About Beaches

Beaches are full of living things, even when they look like just sand and water. Birds, crabs, sea stars, insects, shells, seaweed, and tide pool creatures can all be part of a beach habitat.

Beach pollution can be dangerous for wildlife. Birds may mistake small pieces of plastic for food, and marine animals can become tangled in rope, fishing line, or other trash. Floating plastic can also block sunlight that sea plants and algae need to grow.

A beach scavenger hunt is a great time to teach kids to observe nature without disturbing it. They can point, count, draw, or check items off the list instead of collecting everything they find.

Teacher Friendly Educational Extension

Turn this printable scavenger hunt into a simple ocean science activity for kids. Before the beach trip, ask children to predict which items they think they will find first. After the scavenger hunt, compare the results as a group.

You can also add a beach cleanup discussion. Ask kids why trash can be harmful near the ocean and what families can do to help protect beaches. For a classroom activity, have students draw one beach animal and write one sentence about how people can help keep its habitat clean.

For older children, use the scavenger hunt as a writing prompt. Ask them to write a short story about a day at the beach using five items they found on the printable.
