Batik Kids Craft For Mom
This simple batik-inspired craft is a sweet way for kids to make a special message just for Mom. Children will love the surprise of seeing their hidden words appear as they paint over the plate. It is an easy craft for kids that works well at home or as a classroom activity for Mother’s Day.

Fun Facts
Batik is a traditional art method that uses wax to resist dye or paint. The wax keeps color from soaking into certain areas, which creates beautiful patterns and designs. This craft uses the same basic idea in a kid-friendly way with a white crayon and paint.
Supplies
- White paper plate
- White crayon
- Watercolor paint or other water-based craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Decorative trim
- Cool glue gun or child-safe craft glue
Instructions
- Use a white crayon to write a secret message on the paper plate. Go over the letters a few times so there is plenty of wax on the surface.
- Paint over the entire plate with watercolor paint or another water-based paint. As the paint covers the plate, the crayon message will begin to appear.
- Let the plate dry completely.
- Glue decorative trim around the edge of the plate to finish the project.
- Give your finished plate to Mom with pride.

Patterns, Templates and Printables
This craft does not require a printable template, but you can invite children to plan their secret message on scrap paper first before writing it on the plate.
Teacher Friendly Educational Extension
This craft is a fun way to combine art and writing. Ask children to write a loving message, a favorite memory, or a list of words that remind them of Mom. In the classroom, students can also create these for grandparents, teachers, or other special caregivers. It makes a meaningful keepsake and a simple seasonal display.
Supplies
White Paper plate
White Crayon
Decorative craft paints
Decoratiive Trim
Cool Glue Gun
Instructions
Take the paper plate and carefully write your secret message with the white crayon. Make sure to carefully trace your letters a few times to get lots of the crayon wax deposited onto the paper plate.
Next paint the paper plate with water based paints. The whole premise here is that the water based paint will not stick to the waxy crayon leaving your message intact even when you paint right over it.
Once dry decorate with trim around the edge of the plate.
Give to your mom with pride.
