Fun Facts

Veterans Day is written without an apostrophe because it is a day to honor all veterans, not a day that belongs to one veteran or a group of veterans.

Red poppies are often used as a symbol of remembrance for service members.

Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11.

A handmade poppy can be a simple but heartfelt way for kids to show appreciation.

For a writing activity, ask students to finish the sentence, “I am thankful for veterans because…” Younger children can dictate their answers, while older students can write a short paragraph.

This craft can also connect to social studies lessons about patriotic holidays, symbols of remembrance, and community helpers. Teachers may choose to deliver completed poppies or cards to a local veterans group, nursing home, or community center.
